Rebuilding strength and confidence after ankle fracture

Man with a fractured ankle

When BH, a 59-year-old gentleman, was involved in a serious road traffic accident as a pedestrian in November 2017, he sustained a triple ankle fracture that required surgical fixation.

Following his operation, BH faced 8 weeks of being non-weight bearing, an expected part of the recovery, but one that can make rehabilitation more challenging.

Once his cast was removed, BH transitioned into a walking boot and was cleared to begin full weight-bearing. This marked the beginning of his rehabilitation journey.

Setting a Clear Goal

BH had a specific and time-sensitive aim: to walk comfortably and enjoy his upcoming cruise holiday scheduled for early March. With just over six weeks to prepare, he sought help from AquaPhysio in mid-January 2018.

Initial Assessment

At his first appointment, BH presented with significant swelling in the foot, ankle, and lower leg. His range of motion (ROM) was severely limited in all directions, and his strength had noticeably decreased. He could not stand on one leg for more than a few seconds and was walking without a proper heel strike—an important part of a healthy gait cycle.

Treatment Plan: Harnessing the Power of Water

Hydrotherapy offered the ideal environment for BH to begin moving again safely and effectively. The water’s buoyancy reduced the impact on his healing joint, while hydrostatic pressure helped alleviate swelling—something BH noticed quickly.

“In the mornings, my leg was starting to look normal again,” he remarked, referring to the visible reduction in swelling.

BH was prescribed a tailored aquatic exercise programme designed to:

  • Reduce swelling
  • Improve range of motion
  • Gradually rebuild strength
  • Improve balance and confidence on his injured leg

Sessions were carefully monitored and progressed in line with his recovery, allowing him to regain mobility at a safe pace.

Complementing Hydrotherapy with Land-Based Rehab

In addition to his time in the hydrotherapy pool, BH also committed to a gym-based programme to further enhance his strength and endurance. This combination of aquatic and land-based rehab ensured a holistic approach to recovery.

The Outcome

Thanks to his dedication and the structured rehab approach, BH was able to enjoy his cruise as planned. He walked comfortably around the ship and explored various ports of call, something that had seemed nearly impossible just weeks before.

A Story of determination and smart rehab

BH’s journey is a testament to how hydrotherapy, combined with the right goals and a clear rehabilitation plan, can lead to remarkable outcomes, even within a short timeframe. With the right support and a proactive approach, recovery from complex injuries like a triple ankle fracture is not only possible, it can be life-enhancing.
