How Hydrotherapy Helps You Progress Faster
Water creates the ideal environment to safely reintroduce heel raises and retrain your calf muscles without excessive strain or discomfort. Here’s how:
1. Buoyancy: Less Load, More Movement
Water reduces your body weight, meaning your calf doesn’t have to work as hard to lift your heel. This allows you to gradually rebuild strength without overloading the healing tendon.
Standing in waist-deep water reduces your body weight by around 50%.
Chest-deep water takes 75% of the load off, making early heel raises feel significantly easier. This means you can practice more repetitions without fatigue, accelerating your progress.
2. Hydrostatic Pressure: Reduced Swelling & Faster Recovery
Water naturally compresses your leg, improving circulation and lymphatic drainage. This helps reduce lingering swelling around the ankle and tendon, which can otherwise limit movement and slow down muscle activation.
3. Warm Water: Increased Flexibility & Comfort
Our hydrotherapy pool is heated to 34°C, which improves circulation, relaxes tight muscles, and reduces stiffness. This makes movements smoother and more natural, which is particularly helpful when retraining your walking pattern.
4. Controlled Resistance for Strength Building
Water isn’t just for support, it also provides gentle resistance in all directions. This means that every movement works to strengthen the small stabilising muscles around your ankle while also targeting the calf and Achilles.
Using a pool noodle or resistance band underwater can create graded resistance to progressively challenge your strength without risk.
5. Confidence Booster: Move Without Fear
Many people hold back from full weight-bearing due to fear of re-rupture. In water, the reduced load allows you to push past mental barriers and retrain proper movement patterns without hesitation.
Stay Consistent & Keep Progressing
Heel raises will feel hard at first, but don’t lose motivation, this is a normal part of Achilles rehab! The key is consistency and gradual progression. If you're struggling on land, take advantage of hydrotherapy to build strength, reduce fear, and regain movement faster.
Water removes the barriers that make recovery feel slow and frustrating. So, if you’re feeling stuck, just add water- your Achilles will thank you!
