Overcoming Long-Term Knee Pain - It’s Never Too Late to Improve Could you really recover after more than a decade of knee pain? HG did.
HG came to AquaPhysio in 2011 after years of debilitating bilateral knee pain. His journey started at just 13 with Osgood-Schlatter disease and included five knee arthroscopies to address ligament and cartilage problems.
Most recently, he underwent bilateral lateral releases, but the pain continued.
At his worst, HG could walk no more than a mile and stand for under 20 minutes without discomfort. He couldn’t exercise, experienced instability when climbing stairs, and felt persistent clicking and weakness.
Assessment and Treatment Plan
During his initial assessment, HG had full knee range of motion but presented with a tight iliotibial (IT) band and weak gluteal muscles. We designed a bespoke rehabilitation plan focused on:
- Strengthening the glutes for better knee support
- Stretching the IT band and surrounding tight areas
- Gradually loading the knees through safe, controlled movement
He began our structured aquatic physiotherapy program, blending stretching, strength work, and progressive cardiovascular fitness. After six weeks of 1:1 sessions, HG transitioned into a self-led routine, checking in regularly to track progress and adjust his plan.
Results After Consistent Rehab
With dedication and time, HG’s progress was extraordinary:
- He built up to 30 minutes of deep-water running
- He could walk without restriction
- He stood for over five hours in a meeting, previously impossible
- He lost 9 pounds and felt fitter and pain-free
In His Own Words
“I just wanted to thank you for all you guys are doing to make my knees better. I cannot believe how amazing I feel, and after 11 years of constant pain in my knees, I am now free from any pain... I have lost nine pounds in weight, have no pain anymore, feel fitter in myself, and I thoroughly enjoy the exercises. Your company is extremely professional, and I can highly recommend it to anyone who might be thinking of doing aquatic physiotherapy. It really is money well spent.”
Key Takeaway: It’s Never Too Late
HG’s story proves that even after years of chronic pain, real and lasting change is possible. Whether you're recovering from surgery or living with long-term joint issues, progress begins with the first step and the right support.
