JC is a 49-year-old female who undertook bilateral hip replacement surgery with only an 8-week gap between surgeries. Ongoing hip problems had curtailed her sporting aspirations in rowing, running and windsurfing for the previous 18 years. This was due to a problem called hip dysplasia, causing subsequent labral tears and a developing picture of osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, by the time hip dysplasia was identified as the cause, the joint damage had reached a point of no return. Subsequently, osteotomy surgery was not a preferred option, and JC required total joint replacement for both hips.

Does this sound familiar… you sit to commute to work, you sit at your desk all day at work, you sit for lunch breaks, you then sit down to commute back home from work, and when you get home you sit and relax after a stressful day.
A great solution is to get a standing desk or a job where you stand most of the time, however, short of that the following simple stretches can break up the monotony of a desk job and will still allow you to get your job done. They are easy to do and will help offset some of the negative effects of sitting.

DS is a good amateur level endurance cyclist. He was cycling to work in central London in July 2016 and was involved in a collision with a motorist. After x-rays were taken at St Thomas’s hospital it was established he had a complete fracture to his right femur (thigh bone).
